What Are You Paying for Pat and Why?

The price you pay for Pat is based on many things. What we spent to develop Pat is one factor. More important is being able to invest in the next Pat. Inventing drugs is not about paying for the past. It is about investing for the future.

Finding a price for Pat doesn't take place in a vacuum. For Pat to be a success he needs to be a good value for patients. One way to make him a good value is to sell him cheaper than similar drugs. If he's not cheaper, then he needs to be better for patients than what they can get currently.

There is another piece in the pricing puzzle.

The price you pay for Pat is partly based on what Pfizer charges for him. His price is also based on how you get him.

If you have insurance, you may pay only part of the cost of your medicine. This is called your co-pay. Your health plan may charge different co-pays, such as:

  • $10 for a generic drug
  • $20 for a brand name drug that the insurance company has on its list of preferred drugs
  • $30 for brand name drugs not on that list

Health plans do this because they want to encourage you to use lower-priced products.

If you don't have insurance, you probably pay the full retail price for your medicine. The best way to get lower prices is to be part of an insurance plan. The plan will often be able to get lower prices for its members and it can pass those savings on to you. That is why we support efforts to extend health insurance to more people.
